Canadian Geese Why do I see the nest abandoned?

I live in an apartment complex that has a series of ponds. It attracts a lot of Canadian Geese, and a few Mallards. Last year we had a successful hatching of about 7 baby geese. This year I saw a new nest out in the open with mom sitting on it since early April. The last few days I haven't seen her on the nest, but she was near by. Today when I looked there were no adult geese near by and a nest full of about 9 eggs left alone. When I went for a late evening walk there was a pair of geese not far from the nest, but the mom was not on the nest. Did the parents give up on trying to hatch them? I'm not sure if it is the same pair that had babies last year, or if it is a new pair. It was a lot of fun to see the babies grow up here, and I was looking forward to seeing that again this spring. If they are not successful in hatching this new little family will they come back next year?
