Preparing for ducks and gardening?

We are planning our vegetable garden. Our back yard is quite near a creek and we have mallard ducks hanging out in the yard frequently. I was thinking they would be good as they will eat lots of insects but wondering if they are likely to eat our young vegetable plants instead. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any tips?
