What are large mallard-like ducks called?

In our backyard seasonal lake, we see three ducks that look like large mallards. Two are clearly a couple while the other is alone. They are different than mallards in that both the male and female are colorful with green heads whereas with mallards the female is brownish. Any idea what breed they are?
